Local school districts can provide many valuable services for their students, including free/reduced meals, free breakfasts before school hours and more.

Free & Reduced Price School Meals

Low income students may be eligible to receive free or reduced cost meals at school. If you receive food stamps (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP benefits) or another federal assistance program like TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families), you’re automatically eligible for this program. You just need to fill out an application!

Homeless Liaison

This school district offers a homeless liaison that works with homeless students. This person is responsible for organizing transportation for homeless students, enrolling them in free meal programs, providing referrals to needed community resources and more.

Under the McKinney-Vento act, homeless students are allowed to attend their school of origin whenever feasible regardless of district boundaries. The Homeless Liaison can coordinate transportation to and from the student’s school of origin by arranging a school bus, providing gas vouchers or city bus passes or arranging another form of transportation.

Homeless students are also allowed to be enrolled in their local school immediately. They are not require to have a parent/guardian, proof of residency, immunization records, prior school records or any other documents that are normally required. Once enrolled, the Homeless Liaison must help the student obtain the necessary records.

Homeless students cannot be penalized for infractions such as absenteeism that related to their homelessness.

Students are considered homeless when they meet any of the following criteria:

  • Living in a motel, camp ground, emergency shelter or transitional housing
  • Living in temporarily shared housing
  • Sleeping on the streets, at a business or in any other place not ordinarily designed for sleeping
  • Awaiting foster care placement
